Two Poems

June has hunted me down and found me in a poetry mood. . .

Here are two (fairly) recent ones:

Liberation

My friend Michael

Caught by an algorithm

On the Upper West Side

Transported to Jiangxi

To live a different life

Free of illusions

Now he whorls slyly

In a waterfall of differentials

Dreaming of the clinamen

The simple deviation

In the eternal flow

That creates

Illusion

Beyond the Grey Lagoon

Every time I thought I’d pulled the silence in

From its place beyond the grey lagoon,

These shards

Of time

Fell

Like chunks of narrative

Promising winter afternoons

Tracing echoes

Across a waiting page of sky.

Boredom the Giver danced

While I rested my back against the last gate

Before oblivion

And the touch

That wasn’t there

I felt in the round

Like the speech of the parrot

In the house at the crossroads

Or the pretence of clouds.

These things seemed thrown to the air

But the harvest wouldn’t come

So we queued for a return

Passage, a pause

Inserted

To think

Before the shutter

Was raised

Allowing the light.
